Isle of Rum Adventure
If you want to experience Scotland off the beaten track then this is for you!
“Family trip on the Rum Adventure – exceeded expectations. Billy was an amazing host – his knowledge and passion for: the sea; the island history and wildlife; and of course the fly fishing was exceptional. Our kids (14 yr old and 12 yr old) loved the whole day and this was topped off with the fishing and hauling crab pots at days end. Feeding mackerel to the harbour seals really clinched it. This was the highlight of our three week Scotland trip.”
The Rum Adventure
Journey into the heart of Scotland’s volcanic island
From Mallaig to Rum
Your adventure begins at the Mallaig Yacht pontoons or Armadale on Skye where you’ll step aboard our vessel, Fleur D’ Ecosse. Crossing sapphire-blue waters, we sail past the Sound of Sleat and Loch Slapin, with breath-taking views of the Isle of Skye.
Our destination is the Isle of Rum — once an underwater super volcano, believed to have erupted 65 million years ago. Today, it is one of Scotland’s most captivating and mysterious islands.
Wildlife on the Water
Depending on the season and weather, you may encounter:
-
Porpoises and common dolphins
-
Minke whales surfacing in the waves
-
Sea birds in abundance — especially Manx Shearwaters, which raft up in huge numbers from July to October
Every crossing offers a new connection with Scotland’s rich marine life.
4×4 Island Safari
Once ashore, the adventure continues in a guided 4×4 tour across Rum’s dramatic landscapes. Travel through Glen Kinloch and deep into the island’s National Nature Reserve, all the way to the west coast.
Highlights include:
-
The mist-strewn Rum Cuillin mountain range
-
Local wildlife such as red deer, Highland cattle, and wild ponies (believed to have roamed Rum for over a thousand years)
-
A visit to the striking Greek-styled Mausoleum at Harris Bay, built as a folly by John Bullough
-
Kilmory Bay on the northeast coast, with unrivalled views across the water to the Cuillin of Skye
- Kinloch castle the highland home of the Bullough family
The Stag Rut
From September, Kilmory Glen transforms into a theatre of nature. The air fills with the deep baritone calls of stags during the annual rut — a dramatic display of dominance, often ending in fierce battles when rivals are evenly matched.
